Statement on the Recent Murder-Suicide in Burlington

The Vermont Network stands with all survivors and our Member Organizations, Steps to End Domestic Violence and H.O.P.E. Works, in recognizing and grieving the victims impacted by the recent murder-suicide in Burlington. We send our deepest condolences to the family, friends and beloved community that knew and loved Kayla Noonan. We honor Kayla’s life in this moment of grief and remembrance and send our hope for healing and recovery to the other victim of this act of violence. The impact of this violence includes and extends beyond the named victims, and we recognize the deep impact that this violence has on friends, colleagues and family members.
Every life lost to violence matters and is one too many. In Vermont, over half of all homicides are related to domestic and relationship violence. More than three-quarters of domestic violence-related suicides in Vermont are committed with firearms. The two leading risk factors for domestic violence homicide are the presence of a firearm and the ending of a relationship. Women are five times more likely to be murdered by an abusive partner when the abuser has access to a gun. Many individuals in our community experience relationship violence and you are not alone. If you or someone you know is experiencing relationship violence, help and support is available. You can find a local advocate to speak with at vtnetwork.org/get-help.
